Quitting Youtube

In ten years, YouTube has gone a long way. Gone are the days of uploading without consequence, creating viral material with long-term impact, and attempting to explain how making a living on YouTube actually works to your loved ones. Caspar Lee has been there since the beginning. Lee began his career as an online entertainer in 2010 after launching a YouTube channel at a period when ‘YouTubers’ were not taken seriously and monetization was non-existent. He took two years to reach 1000 subscribers, a figure that fresher creators may currently achieve in under a month. After ten years, video content has grown into a multibillion-dollar business with millions of diverse creators and influencers.

There’s a sound financial structure in place, and YouTube is now expected to be morally and legally responsible for the content it promotes. Video material also has a large commercial component. Influencers are treated like celebrities, and they require the same amount of planning, public relations, financial advice, and, of course, top-notch crisis management as regular celebrities. Influencer marketing organisations have sprung up to help influencers and brands navigate their way into the field. Throughout the last decade, Caspar Lee’s timeline has been anything but linear. He began his career as a quirky YouTube vlogger, appearing in online series, comedy films, and even starring in his own Universal-backed film alongside fellow YouTuber KSI. Lee transitioned to the business side in 2017, joining Influencer LTD, an influencer marketing startup, as chief innovation officer. Lee entered the area confident in knowing what both influencers and marketers require, thanks to his abilities and intimate knowledge of how the space has evolved.

Influencers are also considering monetisation more actively than ever before. YouTube’s partner programme was opened up to everyone in 2012, which meant that anyone could start generating money on YouTube with their first video. In 2017, the platform implemented a regulation requiring creators to reach a particular number of views and subscribers before they could run advertising on their channels and monetize their videos.

Between 2010 and 2020, Lee spent a lot of time on YouTube, and he saw a lot of changes and evolutions. Content regulation, legal disputes, and YouTube’s colossal growth over the last ten years are just a few of the significant issues Lee has dealt with. As a consumer-facing influencer, Lee’s profession has led him to the pinnacle of success. While he has no plans to abandon the grind, he does want to carve out a niche for himself in the business-to-business sector by sharing his knowledge and abilities through Influencer LTD, the influencer marketing company he co-founded with CEO Ben Jeffries in 2017. With that in mind, Lee offered some advice to both creators seeking to grow their positions in the industry and corporations wary of spending large sums of money on influencers.

“In terms of spending, I think the results speak for themselves for the brands that are doing it: budgets allocated to influencer marketing are increasing year on year, and it’s super trackable so you can see ROI. There are a lot of sophisticated companies out there that can help brands, and that’s basically what Influencer is about. If you’re worried, look at some successful campaigns, speak to the professionals, and just give it a go.”- Caspar Lee
