On September 9, 1972, Visnjic was born in Sibenik, SR Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia. The only sibling he has is his older brother Josko. His mother, Milka, worked at a market, while his father, Zeljko, was a bus driver. Throughout his early years, he made appearances in plays. At the age of 16, he made his film debut as a young Ustasha in the contentious Yugoslav film Braca po materi (1988).

Visnjic completed his year of required military service in the Yugoslav People’s Army as a paratrooper in 1990 when he was 18 years old.
