Early Life

Troy Carter was born on November 14, 1972, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States. Troy completed his early education at Huey Elementary and Sayre Middle School. His family was settled in West Philadelphia and he spent his childhood there. When Troy was only at the age of two, his parents got divorced. Troy had to experience some unfortunate events in his family. His father remarried after the divorce from Troy’s mother. His father accidentally shot and killed his second wife’s brother. Troy’s father had to go through the punishment and spent years in prison. But after he got released from prison, he took time and rebuilt his family. Troy admired his father for not giving up even he had to go through a very dark phase. Troy said that his father is one of his heroes. 

At the age of 17, Troy decided to pursue his career in the music industry. He dropped out of school joined a rap team. His rap group was called 2 Too Many. Later Troy was signed into WilJam Records by Will Smith and James Lassiter. But the contract lasted only for a year and they disbanded. After the disbandment, Troy worked as a personal assistant for Lassiter and in the studio of American DJ, Jazzy Jeff. Troy collaborated with Will Smith when he was 22. He has also marketed rap events for musicians like The Notorious B.I.G. in Philadelphia.  Later Troy Carter met Sean Combs who was a record producer. He was hired as an intern for Bad Boy Records in New York City through this. Career Journey

 Troy Carter met the rap singer Eve in Germantown after several years of working in Philadelphia. Eve requested him to be her manager. Troy went on to manage other rap artists like Nelly and Floetry. Troy co-founded the talent management company called Erving Wonder along with Jay Erving, the son of former basketball player Julius Erving. Troy returned to Los Angeles in 2003 and assisted Eve in getting her own UPN show. Troy and Erving sold Erving Wonder to Sanctuary, a British firm, with Carter acting as executive vice president. Erving Wonder’s deal with Sanctuary crumbled apart in the next two years and Eve dismissed him.

Troy fell into debt. His car was seized and his mortgage was foreclosed. As Carter was about to be evicted from his home, he got a chance to change his future. The record producer Vincent Herbert, who had recently left Universal Records, connected Carter to a new client, Lady Gaga, from Def Jam Records. Troy, Herbert, and Gaga toured California, performing at a variety of bars each night on a tight budget. Carter also established Coalition Media Group in 2007. He co-founded The Backplane in 2011, a Silicon Valley firm that aims to “redefine social media” by helping celebrities and brands to “communicate with fans and foster brand image.” Carter was also nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Special in 2011. It was for his work on the HBO special Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden.
